Porkeri

Small east-coast village on Suðuroy, with old turf-roofed buildings and views across the fjord.

Porkeri is a small village on the east coast of Suðuroy, the southernmost of the Faroe Islands, situated between Hov to the north and Vágur to the south. The population is around 330. Like most Faroese villages, it sits at the edge of the sea with steep hillsides rising behind it.

The village has a wooden church from 1847 with a turf roof — a fine example of the traditional church architecture found across the islands — and a local museum next door. The combination of church and museum makes it a worthwhile stop for anyone travelling the length of Suðuroy. The ridge above the village is an easy climb that rewards with views along the entire east coast of the island.
