A nineteenth-century café on the southern side of Senate Square, in a building designed by the architect Carl Ludwig Engel — who else — for whom it is named. The interior of dark wood, leather banquettes, marble tables, and old photographs has been preserved almost unchanged. The cake counter is unusually serious; the coffee is reliable; the cardamom rolls are correct.
Busy in summer with cruise-ship visitors but never frantic. Stop here after a walk around Senate Square and before crossing to the harbour.
