Kaustinen

Central Ostrobothnian village where Finland's living fiddle tradition has UNESCO status.

Kaustinen is a small Central Ostrobothnian village with an identity much larger than its population. Its fiddle tradition is not museum folklore but a living local practice, strong enough to be inscribed by UNESCO as intangible cultural heritage.

The village is at its best during the Kaustinen Folk Music Festival, when the centre fills with concerts, dance, workshops, and musicians from Finland and abroad. Outside festival week, Folk Arts Centre Kaustinen keeps the tradition visible through performances, exhibitions, archives, and the folk music institute.

Kaustinen is not a broad sightseeing town. Its case is narrower and stronger: if you care about music, living tradition, or rural Finnish culture, it is one of the few villages in Finland whose name points to a whole sound.
