Kemi

Finnish Lapland port town known for icebreaker cruises, snow rooms, and a pink church.

Kemi is a small port city on the frozen edge of the Gulf of Bothnia, best known for doing winter tourism in a very literal way. Its strongest draw is the Sampo icebreaker cruise, where visitors go out onto the sea ice and, in season, float in survival suits between broken slabs of ice.

The city itself is plain, but it has enough odd northern character to justify a stop: the SnowCastle complex, a gemstone exhibition with royal replicas, a harbour, and the pink Gothic Revival Kemi Church rising above the centre.

Kemi is not a broad Lapland base like Rovaniemi. It is a specialist stop, and it works best in winter, when the frozen sea turns the town's industrial setting into something memorable.
