Sibelius Hall

A striking concert hall on the southern shore of Vesijärvi, Sibelius Hall is built almost entirely of glue-laminated timber and floor-to-ceiling glass, with a long arched roof rising out of an old industrial complex on the waterfront. The architecture is one of the better contemporary buildings in Finland.

The main season runs from September to May, with the Sinfonia Lahti orchestra performing several times a week. The annual Sibelius Festival, held in early September, brings together international guest conductors for a long weekend of the composer's music.

A story
Sibelius Hall is built almost entirely of wood — the acoustic shell, the cladding, the structural frame — in a deliberate echo of Lahti's traditional plywood industry. It opened in 2000 to a design by Kimmo Lintula and Hannu Tikka, and is widely considered one of the best concert halls in the Nordic countries. Sinfonia Lahti, the resident orchestra, has made well-regarded recordings of Sibelius's symphonies here under Osmo Vänskä.
