Pori

Western Finnish river city near the Bothnian coast, known for Yyteri beach and its jazz festival.

Pori is a mid-sized port city on the Gulf of Bothnia, known across Finland — and to jazz lovers around the world — for its annual Pori Jazz Festival. Every July for nine days, Kirjurinluoto Island fills with music, drawing international names alongside Finnish acts to the riverside concert park. The festival is genuinely good, and worth timing a trip around.

Outside festival season, Pori is a pleasant and unhurried coastal city. The nearby Yyteri Beach, one of the finest sandy stretches in Finland, draws summer visitors, while the Satakunta Museum and Pori Art Museum give the city a cultural weight that surprises first-time visitors. The Juselius Mausoleum, with its Akseli Gallen-Kallela frescoes, is quietly one of the most remarkable small monuments in the country.

Pori works well as a base for exploring the Satakunta coast, and the summer months — when the archipelago and beaches come alive — are by far the best time to visit.
