The obvious day trip is north to Inari, about 65 km on the E75 — the cultural capital of the Finnish Sami and home to the excellent Siida museum of Sami culture and Arctic nature. The drive itself is the kind of empty northern road that makes the trip feel significant.
In winter, snowmobile day tours run east toward the Russian border or south into the deep taiga. In summer, the Lemmenjoki National Park to the northwest is a longer but rewarding day out for gold-panning villages and river valleys.
