Ceillac

Quiet Queyras alpine village with painted sundials, separate ski slopes, and trails to high mountain lakes.

Ceillac is one of the first villages you reach in the Queyras regional park, a quiet corner of the southern French Alps near the Italian border. There is a small ski resort, but it has been kept separate from and above the main village, so the settlement retains its mountain character.

The houses still preserve their traditional features, and some bear painted sundials — a Queyras speciality found throughout the park but particularly well preserved here. The wildflowers in the surrounding Alpine pastures are fabulous, particularly in June and July. Walking trails lead up to Lac Miroir and Lac Sainte-Anne, both spectacularly set beneath rocky peaks. The lakes are the main reason to come in summer, and neither disappoints.

Eating Out

Ceillac is a small village with limited dining options, but the Hotel La Cascade, just upstream past the campsites, is a Logis de France with reasonably priced and well-prepared menus. It is named after the waterfall directly opposite.

Things to Do

Ceillac's appeal is almost entirely outdoors. The surrounding landscape in the Queyras regional park offers some of the finest walking in the southern French Alps, with high-altitude lakes, wildflower meadows and well-marked trails that see far fewer walkers than the more popular Écrins massif. In winter, the small ski resort above the village provides gentle skiing and cross-country trails.
