This huge network of fortifications was built between 1823 and 1845 on the hillside above Grenoble. Walk through the forts, tunnels, and ramparts, then take in the panoramic views of the city and three surrounding mountain ranges from the top. There is a restaurant at the summit for sunset drinks. You can hike up — the path is well-maintained and not too strenuous — or ride the iconic cable cars, known as "les bulles" (the bubbles), which depart from Jardins de Ville.
