A story
The building was originally a convent of the Order of the Visitation, founded in 1620. During the Revolution it was confiscated and turned into a prison. One of its inmates was a Grenoble-born priest named Jean-Baptiste Champagnat, who went on to found the Marist Brothers teaching order. The convent's chapel, with its decorated ceiling, survives intact and is one of the most beautiful interiors in the city.
