Strasbourg is serious about food. The local speciality is choucroute garnie — sauerkraut heaped with sausages and smoked meats — but the city also has its share of tarte flambée (a thin, crispy tart with crème fraîche, onion, and lardons), and a clutch of restaurants serious enough to earn Michelin stars. The winstub — a traditional Alsatian wine tavern — is the right format for a relaxed evening meal.
Maison Kammerzell
One of the most famous restaurants in Alsace, right beside the cathedral in a 15th-century building. Not cheap, but the choucroute and foie gras are the real thing.
address: 16 Place de la Cathédrale, 67000 Strasbourg
Flam's
Good for tarte flambée, the Alsatian answer to pizza — a thin wood-fired base with crème fraîche, onions, and bacon. Casual and lively.
address: 29 Rue des Frères
Le St. Sépulcre
A traditional winstub on a quiet street near the cathedral. Old-fashioned in the best sense — wooden benches, local wine, and honest Alsatian cooking.
address: Rue des Orfèvres
Au Crocodile
A long-standing fine dining address. The cooking is inventive and the execution careful. Expect to pay for it.
address: 10 Rue de l'Outre
