Pontaillac is Royan's best-known surf and family beach, set below its residential quarter west of the centre. It has a more contained feel than the long central sands, with cafés and restaurants facing the water.
It is not wild, and that is part of the appeal. Come for an easy swim, a bodyboard session, or a coastal walk that shows how Royan shifts from rebuilt centre to old resort villas.
