Cliff Terrace Viewpoint

Behind the church, an open terrace sits at the edge of the limestone cliff and offers one of the finest unobstructed views in this part of Burgundy. The Yonne winds below in a broad curve, its banks fringed with poplars; on a clear morning the water reflects the sky and the hills beyond fade into haze. The ruins of the old château walls stand nearby. There is no railing and the drop is considerable — the view is all the better for it.

story: > The cliff on which the village stands was already a strongpoint in Roman times. The medieval lords of Mailly held a toll on river traffic from this position for centuries, levying dues on every barge that passed below — a profitable arrangement that helped fund the church construction underway just metres away.
