The main square of Ajaccio, running from the port up to the old town, is lined with cafes and anchored at the top by a fountain with a marble statue of Napoleon dressed as a Roman emperor. It is a good place to get your bearings and watch the city go about its business. The square fills up in the evenings; the morning market nearby is worth catching before 10am.
