L'Ange de la Baie (Memorial July 2016)

L'Ange de la Baie — the Angel of the Bay — is the memorial erected on the Promenade des Anglais to remember the 86 people killed in the Bastille Day terrorist attack of July 14, 2016, when a truck drove into a celebrating crowd. The sculpture, by the artist Arman Fernandez's widow, takes the form of a large stainless steel figure with wings spread, positioned to overlook the sea at the point on the promenade near where the attack began.

The memorial is simple and understated by French monument standards, which suits it well. The plaques listing the names of victims from many different countries reflect the fact that Nice's Bastille Day crowd is always international. The site remains a place of active remembrance; flowers and mementos are regularly left at the base.
