Maison des Métiers d'Art

The Maison des Métiers d'Art is housed in the former consular building — the seat of the town's governing consuls during Pézenas's long run as a major administrative center for the Languedoc. The building itself is worth visiting for the architecture; the fact that it now showcases contemporary craft and art is a good bonus. Entry is free.

The work on display leans toward traditional métiers — pottery, glass, jewelry, textiles — made by artisans with ateliers in and around the town. Pézenas has an unusually high concentration of working craftspeople, partly because property is cheap enough to maintain a workshop and partly because the town attracts a particular kind of buyer. Look for the sign "Je conçois, je fabrique dans mon atelier" on shops throughout town: it means the work was designed and made on the premises, not sourced from a wholesaler.
