Place Gambetta is the social center of Pézenas — the square where the Saturday market sets up, where café terraces spill out on warm evenings, and where locals gather after the tourist rush of the old town streets. It is not the most architecturally imposing space in town, but it has an easy, lived-in energy that the more photogenic corners sometimes lack.
On Saturday mornings the square and the streets around it transform into the best reason to time your visit accordingly. Produce from the Hérault plain, oysters from the étangs along the coast, local cheeses, honey, and of course the town's signature Petit Paté de Pézenas all appear in force. The market runs most of the morning and doubles as the town's main social event of the week.
