MuMa — Musée d'Art Moderne André Malraux

Second-largest Impressionist collection in France, with the world's finest Boudin holdings

The Musée d'Art Moderne André Malraux sits on the waterfront in a landmark 1961 building of steel and glass, capped by a rotating aluminium lantern called "La Vigie" (the Lookout). The collection is the second-largest impressionist holding in France after the Musée d'Orsay in Paris, with exceptional works by Eugène Boudin, Claude Monet, Raoul Dufy (a Le Havre native), and Pierre-Auguste Renoir. The permanent collection is well displayed, and the building itself — with its views across the avant-port — is part of the experience.

Address: 2 Boulevard Clemenceau, 76600 Le Havre. Closed Tuesdays.

A story
Eugène Boudin was born in Honfleur just across the Seine estuary and spent much of his life painting the harbour and beaches of Le Havre. He was the first to convince the young Claude Monet to paint outdoors — a nudge that helped launch Impressionism. The MuMa holds the world's largest Boudin collection, and you can see exactly why Monet listened.
