Shopping

Le Havre is not primarily a shopping destination, but the city has a good covered market at the Halles Centrales (open Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday mornings) where the fish, cheese, and charcuterie counters reflect the quality of the Norman coast and countryside. The market is one of the livelier corners of the city on a Saturday morning.

The main commercial shopping street is Rue de Paris and the pedestrian streets around it, with the usual chain stores. The area around the Saint-François quarter near the old harbour has a few independent shops and galleries. For wine, the Caves de la Madeleine and other specialist shops carry a good selection of Normandy ciders and Calvados alongside conventional French wines.
