Hotel de Caumont

Restored eighteenth-century town house used for major art exhibitions

Address 3 Rue Joseph Cabassol, 13100 Aix-en-Provence

The Hotel de Caumont is one of the most spectacular hotels particuliers of the Mazarin quarter, an early-eighteenth-century mansion restored in 2015 as an exhibition centre. The interiors — frescoed ceilings, gilded boiseries, a formal staircase — were brought back with serious care, and they make a beautiful setting for the rotating programme of art shows that has covered Botticelli, Hiroshige, Turner, and Chagall in recent years.

The formal French garden behind the house is small but lovely. There is a tea room overlooking it, and a short film about Cezanne plays in a side room throughout the year. Worth visiting even between exhibitions — though check the dates: a great show pulls the place together, while between shows it can feel a bit empty.
