Kutaisi rewards visitors who take time to explore beyond the headline monuments. The city has a good cluster of museums in the centre, a remarkable synagogue from its significant Jewish community, and an old market quarter that feels genuinely Georgian rather than touristy. The big attractions — Bagrati Cathedral and Gelati — are unmissable, but the Sataplia and Prometheus caves are also worth the short trips out of town.
