Friedrichsturm

25-metre stone lookout tower on the Kienberg with views across the Black Forest

The Friedrichsturm sits on the Kienberg, the wooded hill that rises immediately south of Freudenstadt. It is a stout 25-metre stone tower with a spiral staircase to a small viewing platform at the top. From there the panorama runs across the rooftops of Freudenstadt to the ridges of the Northern Black Forest and, on clear days, west to the Vosges across the Rhine plain.

The walk up from town takes about thirty minutes on marked paths from the southern edge of the Marktplatz through the Parkwald. The tower is normally open in daylight hours from spring to autumn; in winter the path can be icy. There is no entrance fee. It is a popular short hike for visitors with half a day to spare and an easy way to get above the treetops without driving.

A story
The tower was built in 1899 by the Schwarzwaldverein, the Black Forest Club whose volunteer-maintained trail network still threads the entire range. It was named for King Friedrich I of Württemberg, on whose 100th coronation anniversary the construction was begun.
