Things to Do

The Marktplatz and the Stadtkirche are worth an hour on arrival; after that, point yourself at the forest. The Parkwald nature preserve begins at the edge of town and offers trails for all levels, from gentle valley walks to longer ridge routes — the obvious target is the Friedrichsturm lookout on the Kienberg, half an hour up. Beyond town the Schwarzwald Hochstrasse north toward Baden-Baden is one of the finest drives in Germany and gives access to the Mummelsee and the high moors of the Hornisgrinde. South and west, day walks lead to the Sankenbach Waterfalls above Baiersbronn and the remote Glaswaldsee. The old silver-mining valley of Christophstal is the historical curiosity, an easy half-day from the centre.
