Kniebis

High-altitude village and pass at 935m on the road west toward the Rhine

Kniebis is a small village strung along the B28 at 935 metres, marking the high point of the road between Freudenstadt and the Rhine valley. The setting is austere — exposed moorland and pine, with views west on clear days to the Vosges. It has been a small spa and a winter sports outpost since the late 19th century; today a couple of modest hotels, a small Heimatmuseum, and a network of trails are the main offering.

The village is the western terminus of the Black Forest High Road and a hub for cross-country skiing in winter. In summer it is a good base for ridge walks, including the path north along the Schwarzwald Hochstrasse and routes south to the Glaswaldsee. The drive from Freudenstadt takes about twenty minutes; local bus 7110 also serves the village.

A story
Kniebis sat directly on the German–French armistice line in November 1918, and the original border stones — placed in the forest after the Treaty of Versailles — are still visible along the Westwallweg trail above the village. The pass also served as a Luftwaffe command post during the Second World War.
