University of Tübingen

Founded in 1477, still defining the character of the town

Tübingen is a university town in the truest sense: the Eberhard Karl University, founded in 1477, has shaped the place for more than five centuries and still does — around a third of the population are students. The university is spread across the old town and northern districts, with the older humanities and theology faculties clustered in the medieval centre.

There is no single "campus" to visit, but the university is everywhere: in the noise of the cafes, the bicycle traffic, the bookshops and the secondhand record stores. The old aula (great hall) on Münzgasse, the university library, and the various small faculty museums are open to visitors during semester.
