Things to Do

Tubingen's old town is the main attraction — wandering the half-timbered alleys, climbing to the castle, and sitting in the Marktplatz with a coffee. The Stiftskirche St. Georg has a beautiful interior and a tower you can climb for views over the red rooftops to the Neckar. Schloss Hohentubingen, now part of the university, has a museum with archaeological collections and one of the oldest known figurative artworks in the world. The Holderlinturm on the riverbank — once home to the mad poet Holderlin — is the most poignant of Tubingen's literary landmarks. Punting on the Neckar in summer, in the long wooden boats called Stocherkahn, is a Tubingen ritual that is touristy but genuinely fun.
