The Stadtkirche St. Marien is the oldest building in Wittenberg and, as the parish church of the town, the place where Martin Luther preached throughout his active life. He delivered thousands of sermons here; it was also where he married Katharina von Bora in 1525. The two towers flanking the west facade are a landmark visible from across the town.
The interior holds the famous Reformation Altarpiece painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder — a remarkable work that depicts Luther and his contemporaries alongside biblical scenes. Also worth seeing is the baptismal font from 1457, which Luther himself was not baptised in (he was born in Eisleben) but would have used for the baptisms of his children.
