Altes Mädchen ("Old Girl"), in the converted Schanzenhöfe brewery buildings on the edge of the Schanzenviertel, is a large beer hall and craft-beer brewery run by Ratsherrn, the city's most respected modern brewer. About sixty taps cover Ratsherrn's own beers and a rotating list of international guests; long communal tables fill the high-ceilinged hall.
The kitchen does substantial bar food — soft pretzels, sausages, smoked-pork ribs, an excellent crispy-skin pork knuckle — and the brewery shop next door sells everything to take away. A free tour of the brewery runs on Saturday afternoons. The terrace courtyard is one of the better summer drinking spots in the area.
