The Rote Flora is an autonomously occupied former theatre on the Schulterblatt in the Schanzenviertel, squatted continuously since 1989 and one of the most politically charged buildings in Germany. The 1888 building was scheduled for redevelopment into a musical-theatre venue in the late 1980s; protesters occupied it in November 1989 and have held it ever since, against repeated attempts at eviction.
It hosts left-wing meetings, free concerts, and the headquarters of much of Hamburg's autonomous scene. The exterior is densely layered in graffiti and political posters. There is no programme of tourist visits — you go to look at the façade, which is a small piece of German political history written in spray paint. The G20 summit riots of 2017 began here.
