One of the larger zoos in northern Germany, with around 3,500 animals across 340 species. The zoo is particularly well regarded for its Darwineum — a large evolution-themed building completed in 2012, housing great apes and featuring an immersive rainforest environment. It consistently ranks among the top zoo attractions in Germany.
Good for families and a solid half-day. The zoo is set in woodland on the western edge of the city, reachable by tram. The sea lion and polar bear enclosures are popular draws, and the African savanna section gives the larger mammals room to move.
