Wismar is a small city and the nightlife is modest, but there are enough bars and cafes around the Marktplatz and the old harbour streets to keep you occupied for an evening. The university (Hochschule Wismar) brings some student energy to the mix, particularly in the streets west of the centre.
In summer the outdoor seating around the Marktplatz is the place to be — the square is photogenic at any time of day and the long northern evenings make it especially pleasant. Craft beer has arrived in Wismar as it has everywhere in Germany; look for it alongside the reliable local Mecklenburger brews.
