Things to Do

Wismar's medieval town centre is compact enough to cover on foot in a day, and the density of surviving Brick Gothic architecture is remarkable. The three great churches — Nikolaikirche, Georgenkirche, and the ruined Marienkirche — set the skyline, while the vast Marktplatz with its Wasserkunst fountain and the gabled merchant houses around it show what a prosperous Hanseatic city once looked like. The old harbour, a short walk north, is still a working port with a distinct salty character.
