Getting There

By train

Wismar Hauptbahnhof is the main station, a short walk east of the town centre. Regular regional trains connect Wismar to Rostock (around 1 hour) and to Schwerin (around 30 minutes), from where you can connect to Hamburg, Berlin, and the wider German rail network. There is no direct long-distance high-speed service — Schwerin is the interchange point for ICE and IC trains. Check the Deutsche Bahn website (bahn.de) for current timetables and prices; booking ahead usually pays off.

By car

Wismar sits on the B105 Baltic coast road between Rostock and Lübeck, and the A20 motorway runs a few kilometres south of town, with junctions well signposted. From Schwerin take the B106 north, about 30 kilometres. Parking in the old town centre is limited; there are car parks near the harbour and on the ring roads surrounding the medieval core. Most of the historic centre is partially pedestrianised.

By bus

Long-distance Flixbus services stop in Wismar on some routes between Hamburg and Rostock. The local bus network connects the town to surrounding villages in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, but for most travellers the train is a more practical option.
