The Technisches Landesmuseum Mecklenburg-Vorpommern sits west of the old town in a former industrial complex and covers the technological and industrial history of the region. The collection ranges from agricultural machinery and steam engines to shipbuilding tools and telecommunications equipment — a reasonably broad interpretation of "technology" that reflects the mixed economy of a region that has been in turn a Hanseatic trading hub, a Swedish province, an agricultural landscape, a GDR industrial zone, and a post-reunification service economy.
The shipbuilding exhibits are the most locally relevant: Wismar has had working shipyards since the medieval period, and the Peene-Werft and its successor TKMS still operate from the harbour. The museum is a short walk or bike ride from the old town and is more likely to appeal to visitors with an interest in industrial history or who are travelling with children than to those focused purely on the medieval city. Opening hours and admission prices vary by season.
