K20 — Kunstsammlung Nordrhein-Westfalen

The K20 on Grabbeplatz is the main modern art museum of North Rhine-Westphalia and one of the finest collections in Germany. The permanent collection is anchored by an exceptional holding of Paul Klee — around 100 works, one of the most significant Klee collections anywhere — alongside major pieces by Picasso, Matisse, Mondrian, and the German Expressionists.

The post-war rooms are outstanding: Joseph Beuys, Gerhard Richter, and Sigmar Polke are all represented in depth. The Düsseldorf Academy tradition of the 1960s and 1970s — which made the city one of the most important centres of contemporary art in the world — is documented here better than anywhere else. The building itself, a 1986 granite-clad cube by the Danish architects Dissing + Weitling, sits on Grabbeplatz in the Altstadt.

A story
The K20's Paul Klee collection — around 100 works — is one of the largest in the world, assembled partly because Klee himself destroyed documents and distributed works widely after the Nazis declared his art "degenerate" and dismissed him from his professorship at the Düsseldorf Academy in 1933.
