Kleine Kalmit

The Kleine Kalmit is a gentle hill about four kilometres southwest of Landau, protected as a nature reserve for its exceptional dry grassland flora. The summit gives panoramic views over the southern Palatinate wine country — rolling hills covered in vine rows, with the Haardt Mountains rising to the west and the Rhine plain stretching east toward the Black Forest.

Walking to the top takes about 20 minutes from the car park near the wine village of Ilbesheim. The grassland paths are lined with wild orchids in May and June, followed by a succession of dry-habitat flowers through the summer. The views make it worth the detour even for non-botanists. Combine the walk with a visit to one of the wine estates in Ilbesheim or the nearby village of Siebeldingen, which has some of the best Pinot Noir producers in the Palatinate.

A story
The Kleine Kalmit is a small hill rising from the Palatinate vineyards south of Landau, covered in the kind of dry limestone grassland that has almost disappeared from central Europe. The hill is a nature reserve because it supports plant communities — orchids, wild thyme, sun roses — that depend on the poor, warm, calcium-rich soil that vine-growing has traditionally maintained.
