Palatinate wine-route town with Vauban traces, vineyard hills, and a compact cafe-lined centre.
Landau in der Pfalz sits at the southern edge of the German Wine Route, surrounded by the vineyards and wooded hills of the Palatinate. It is a pleasant, compact town that makes a good base for exploring one of Germany's warmest and most productive wine regions — the area around here grows excellent Riesling, Pinot Noir, and Gewurztraminer.
The old town still shows traces of Landau's past as a French fortress: the star-shaped fortifications designed by Vauban are partly visible, and the town changed hands between France and Germany multiple times. The main square, the Rathausplatz, is lined with cafes and anchored by a handsome town hall. The zoo, Landau's most-visited attraction, is unusually good for a town this size.
If you are driving the German Wine Route, Landau is worth a stop and a glass of wine. The surrounding villages — Rhodt, Burrweiler, Edenkoben — are even more picturesque, with half-timbered wine estates and vineyard trails.

Eating Out
Landau's eating-out scene is shaped by the wine culture that surrounds it. The Palatinate has a distinctive culinary tradition — hearty, regional, heavily influenced by French proximity — and the best meals in and around Landau combine good local wine with dishes like Saumagen (stuffed pig's stomach, the regional speciality), Leberknödelsuppe, and flame-grilled meats.
The Rathausplatz and surrounding streets have a good range of cafes and restaurants for a town this size. The most enjoyable dining experiences are often the Straußwirtschaften in the surrounding wine villages rather than the town restaurants — seasonal farm-taverns where you eat simple local food with estate wine at a table shared with other visitors.
