Wjelbik

Bautzen's main Sorbian restaurant, in a 17th-century house off the Hauptmarkt

Address Kornstraße 7, Bautzen

Wjelbik is the place to try Sorbian food in Bautzen — a small restaurant in a vaulted 17th-century cellar near the Hauptmarkt, serving the dishes that are the speciality of the region. The "Sorbian wedding feast" — hochzeitssuppe, beef with horseradish sauce, sweet poppyseed cake — is the signature menu and is unironically good.

Reservations strongly recommended in summer and at weekends. The interior is small, with painted Sorbian motifs, and the waitstaff often wear traditional dress. Closed on Sundays and Mondays. A meal for two with wine runs around 70–90 euros.
