Obermarkt (Upper Market Square)

The Obermarkt is the larger of Görlitz's two main squares, a wide oblong space lined with Baroque and Classicist buildings. At its eastern end stands the Reichenbacher Turm (Reichenbach Tower), one of the best-preserved medieval towers in Saxony, which you can climb for views over the town and across the Neisse to Zgorzelec in Poland. The tower dates from the 13th century and was used as a watchtower, prison, and signal station at various points in its history.

The square has a more animated, commercial character than the Untermarkt — cafes and restaurants occupy ground floors around the edges, and there's a regular farmers' market. The Nikolaikirche (Church of St. Nicholas) on the northern side of the square has a striking Gothic tower and is worth entering for its interior, which retained much of its original furnishing through the war.
