Church of Saints Peter and Paul

The Church of Saints Peter and Paul (Stadtkirche St. Peter und Paul) is the main church of Görlitz and one of the most impressive Gothic churches in Saxony. Its twin towers are visible from across the city and serve as a navigational landmark in the Old Town. The church was built in stages from the 13th to the 15th century, and its interior contains the famous "sun organ" — an 18th-century instrument with a remarkably preserved case that is still used for regular concerts.

The "sun organ" gets its name from the decorative solar rays on the case behind the pipes. It was built by the Dresden court organ builder Eugenio Casparini in 1703 and remains one of the best-preserved Baroque organs in Germany. Organ concerts are held regularly; the acoustics of the Gothic interior are excellent, and this is one of the better ways to spend an evening in Görlitz.
