Harhoog Dolmen

A megalithic burial chamber from the Funnelbeaker culture, in a heath above Keitum

A rectangular megalithic tomb dating to around 3,000 BC, the Harhoog stands on a low rise of heath above Keitum with views across the Wadden Sea. The chamber, open to the air, is formed of upright sidestones supporting three large capstones — the kind of construction that defines the Funnelbeaker culture across the southern Baltic and North Sea coasts.

The dolmen was moved here from its original spot near Tinnum during airport construction in 1954, but the reconstruction is faithful and the setting is in fact better than the original. Combine it with a walk in the heath, particularly in late August when the heather flowers.
