Kampen

The fashionable, moneyed end of the island — thatched houses and the red cliff

Kampen sits on the high heath above the Rotes Kliff, a few kilometres north of Westerland, and has been the smart end of Sylt since the 1920s — when the writers and artists who summered here gave it a louche reputation that the bankers and industrialists later took over. The streets are lined with low thatched-roof houses behind clipped hedges, the boutiques sell Loro Piana and Brunello Cucinelli, and the most photographed corner of the village is the cluster of cafés around the Whisky Strasse intersection.

The character is more reserved than glitzy — there are no tower blocks and no neon — but the price tags are unambiguous. Visit for the cliffs, the lighthouse, the cluster of fish restaurants and cafés, and a walk through one of Germany's most expensive villages.
