While in Corfu, you have an opportunity to take some interesting excursions to other islands in the area. Some of the most popular day trip destinations are the island of Paxos and a trip to nearby Albania.
Albania
Excursions to Albania take you to the archaeological site of Butrint. Take a ferry to Sarande which leaves daily at Corfu from 10 AM and returns at 4:30 PM in the summer and 2PM in the winter. It takes over an hour to get to Sarande. You will then travel the rest of the 12 miles by car over some pretty rough road. Butrint was an important city during the Roman Empire and was resurrected after the Dark Ages as an Ottoman port. You will see a Greco-Roman theater that is amazingly well preserved, yet it floods often making it look like a lake. A 6th century baptistry is nearby and has a floor with depictions of peacocks, trailing vines, grapes, urns, and other geometrical patterns done in mosaic. This was the private baths of someone rather rich in the town.
Paxos
Several excursion companies in Corfu organize day trips to the island of Paxos, but you can get there yourself if you wish. Simply hop on a seaplane and it only takes 15 minutes as opposed to an hour by hydrofoil. Olive oil from Paxos is used in many different products from shampoo to hand lotion. You can purchase these products on the island. This is a tourist island and the people and vendors there are very friendly and helpful. The beaches are beautiful and quiet and most are rocky, but the water is so clear that you can't help but jump in and swim. You can charter a boat for about $40 to $60 for a trip around the island. You will get views of the western caves and cliffs and some excursions actually go inside some of the caves so you can see the rock formations.
In Corfu you can find many different excursion companies that take you to Albania and Paxos and other small islands in the area as well as to the mainland of Greece. The cost varies but this is a good way in which you can see all there is to see in and around Corfu.
