Malia's essential sight is the Minoan Palace of Malia, a large archaeological site east of town and one of Crete's major Minoan palaces. Nearby Chryssolakkos adds a smaller but intriguing burial-site stop for archaeology-minded visitors.
For sea and sand, Potamos Beach is the better choice if you want a little breathing room near the palace, while Malia Beach sits closer to the resort strip and nightlife. The tiny offshore chapel-islet of Afentis Christos is a good marker for a waterfront walk, and nearby Stalida and Sisi offer gentler resort alternatives along the coast.
