Getting There

Sitia has its own small airport (JSH) with summer flights to Athens and a few European cities; Heraklion airport, 130 km west, has many more options and a 2.5-hour drive on the new northern highway. ANEK Lines runs an overnight ferry from Piraeus, calling at Sitia on the way to Rhodes — slow but a great arrival.

By road, the highway from Heraklion through Agios Nikolaos is fast as far as Agios Nikolaos and slower thereafter. KTEL buses link Sitia to Agios Nikolaos, Heraklion, and Ierapetra several times a day. A rental car is essential for exploring the eastern beaches and the Zakros area.
