Things to Do

Sitia rewards slow wandering more than hard sightseeing. The Venetian fortress above the town is the obvious landmark; the archaeological museum is small but holds extraordinary Minoan finds. Most visitors use the town as a base for day trips east — the palm beach at Vai, the Minoan palace at Kato Zakros, the Toplou Monastery on the way — and that is the right approach. A day in town and three on the road covers it well.
