Richtis Gorge is one of the best short nature outings from Sitia, a surprisingly green ravine in eastern Crete where plane trees, oleander, stone walls, and running water replace the usual dry hillsides. The walk leads to a small waterfall and pool, which feel almost improbable in this part of the island. It is a good reminder that Crete's landscapes are more varied than beaches and bare mountains.
The route can be slippery and uneven, so treat it as a real walk rather than a sandal stroll. Spring is especially pleasant, when water flow and wildflowers are better, but shade makes it useful in warmer months too. Start early if you want quiet, and carry water even though the gorge feels cool.
