Cave of Perama

The Cave of Perama, on the Goritsa Hill just 5 kilometres from Ioannina, is one of the largest and most impressive show caves in Greece. Its chambers extend over 14,000 square metres and contain 19 different types of stalactite and stalagmite formation, some of them millions of years old. Guided tours (in Greek and sometimes English) take about 45 minutes and cover the main chambers.

The cave was formed by an underground branch of the Louros River and the formations inside range from delicate calcite needles to massive columns. The prehistoric fossils found here — bears, wolves, hyenas and deer from the Pleistocene epoch — are displayed in the cave museum. It makes an easy half-day excursion from Ioannina.

A story
Perama cave was discovered in 1940 during World War II, when Greek civilians were sheltering in the surrounding hills from Italian bombardment and stumbled on the entrance. The fossils of prehistoric cave bears — ursus spelaeus — were found inside along with the stalactites and stalagmites, and the cave has since yielded one of the richest collections of Pleistocene fauna ever found in Greece.
