Zalongo

Clifftop memorial above Preveza, commemorating the Souli women of the Dance of Zalongo.

Zalongo is a clifftop memorial above the Preveza plain, reached by a long stairway from the monastery of Agios Dimitrios. Its monumental figures commemorate the Souli women who, according to Greek national memory, chose death on the cliff in 1803 rather than capture by Ali Pasha's forces.

The place is powerful because the sculpture, the climb, and the drop all work together. Come for the history, but also for the view across Epirus toward the Ionian side of Greece. It is best treated as a deliberate stop rather than a quick detour: the steps and the story both need time.
