Church of Agioi Apostoloi

The Church of the Holy Apostles (Ekklisia Agion Apostolon) sits at the foot of the castle hill in the old town and is considered the spiritual birthplace of modern Greece in Kalamata. It is a small Byzantine church with a long history — the original structure dates from the 14th century, though it has been rebuilt and restored over the centuries.

The church is active and can be visited during normal visiting hours. Inside, the iconostasis and several icons of considerable age are preserved. The church square is a pleasant spot in the old town, with a commemorative plaque marking the events of March 1821. It is a short walk from the castle and makes a natural combined visit.
